The Harbor Pilot House is modeled after the structural mechanics of dragonfly flight; in particular the utilization of a dense, concentrated scale (the pterostigma) as a counterbalance to the weight of the wing. The project serves as an emergency refuge during extreme weather events. For example, in the area, storm surges are capable of reaching 30’ above sea level. At this elevation an extensive landing is presented where one end is fitted to serve as a dock for the harbor pilot to attend to his duties during the event.
All water can be supplemented through the rain catchment system and is stored in a basin below the kitchen and bath; the utilities it services. Once the water level has surpassed maximum capacity, a small channel dumps the excess. The project establishes a habitat for wildlife and public space and its predominant angle shields the user from the elements while maximizing rain catchment and passive ventilation.
