Situated adjacent to the Lummus Park Historic District at the southern extremity of Overtown within Miami, FL the site lies on the banks of the Miami River. The predominately black, low-income community sees an abundance of homelessness, crime, and industrial pollution after the Jim Crow Era and the subsequent razing and partitioning of the neighborhood through the construction of I-95.
Lummus Landing is an experiment in urban community agriculture + aquaculture to bring equity, engaging experiences with the native ecosystem, and walkability through the provision of discounted meals, child care, environmental education, a safe community space, and a transit link to the surrounding low-income community. The project seeks
to achieve the aforementioned while stimulating the local economy and utilizing sustainable regional materials to encourage the development of a new vernacular in the face of climate change induced sea level rise.
