Vancouver, British Columbia is frequently ranked among the world’s most livable cities. Though not unique to this North American city - many contemporary plagues have deteriorated the quality of living as a direct result of rapid urbanization and natural resource extraction. Vancouver Affordable Infill Housing introduces a reproducible scheme to combat the environmental and urban issues specific to the Pacific Northwest: urban sprawl, car dependency, wildfires, smog, industrial water contamination, and the collapse of salmon populations.
The proposed Vancouver Affordable Infill Housing scheme is intended for typical Vancouver single-family lots (33’ x 122’) lying within walkable proximity to SkyTrain Metro stations with adjacent streams. The project seeks to resolve Vancouver’s environmental issues by recreating the density, materiality, and closed loop ecology employed in traditional Coast Salish plankhouses and the daylighting of the regions paved-over streams.
